چکیده

Experimental and numerical tests of the trap-door problem have been carried out, involving several granular materials. Three phases have been observed in the load transfer mechanism, as the trap-door is moved downward. The classical pattern for the description of this type of problem (a vertical plane of failure at each edge of the trap-door) corresponds to the third phase observed. The previous phases correspond to the maximal load transfer and then to the expansion of the granular material from the bottom to the top of the granular layer. Discrete numerical modelling has been processed to investigate the effects of the particles size and of the shear strength parameters on the mechanisms observed. The respective role of peak and residual friction angles has been identified.

Frictional Strain Hardening-softening in Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Arching Effect

In the current paper the results of a numerical simulation that were verified by a well instrumented experimental procedure for studying the arching effect over a trapdoor in sand is presented. To simulate this phenomenon with continuum mechanics, the experimental procedure is modeled in ABAQUS code using stress dependent hardening in elastic state and plastic strain dependent frictional harden...

Numerical investigation on the optimal location of floating piles in slope under seismic

Location of floating piles is one of the main factors influencing on their optimal performance with respect to slope stability improvement. Many studies have been devoted to this concern using different analytical methods. Due to the importance of this issue in seismic conditions, still more studies are necessary and therefore, the location of floating piles has been investigated in this resear...

A Numerical Analysis on the Performance of Counterweight Balance on the Stability of Undercut Slopes

One of the important parameters in undercut slopes design is the determination of the maximum stable undercut span. The maximum stable undercut span is a function of slope geometry, the strength parameters of the slope material, condition of discontinuities, underground water condition, etc. However, the desired production capacity and therefore the size of excavating equipment will sometimes a...

An Experimental Investigation into the Arching Effect in Fine Sand

In the current paper results of a well instrumented experimental procedure for studying the arching effect in loose and dense sand are presented. The apparatus comprises concentric circular trapdoors with different diameters that can yield downward while stresses and deformations are recorded simultaneously. As the trapdoor starts to yield, the whole soil mass deforms elastically. However, afte...

Soil Arching Behind Retaining Walls under Active Translation Mode: Review and New Insights

Granular materials have a tendency to exhibit an arching effect by which the load is transferred from yielding parts to adjacent stationary parts. Retaining walls are among those structures that the soil arching plays an important role in the distribution of earth pressures. This paper briefly reviews the development of soil arching theory and its application to different geotechnical projects....
